The Reuters news agency quoted anonymous sources, who stated that Russia had supported Serbia's request to call an urgent meeting, while the UK and U.S. wished to wait until the next regular session on Kosovo.

In the end a compromise was reached to call consultations behind closed doors.

Serbia asked for an urgent meeting back on Tuesday, as soon as the events in Kosovo started to unfold.

Germany is presiding over the council this month.

That country said that the whole of the UN Security Council makes decisions on calling urgent sessions, and that the Serbian request will be presented at the meeting.

Serbia will be represented by her Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.
