Romanian president: Independence of Kosovo illegal and in breach of UN resolution 1244

The declaration of independence of Kosovo was achieved through violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, while the great powers are no longer respecting either the resolutions of the UN Security Council, nor international law, Romanian president Trayan Basescu said on Tuesday

The Romanian president says that Europe is now receiving its "first lessons about the breaking of international law and the UN Charter" and that it asks the question about "what kind of guarantees can small states receive".

"International law, the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act are all mentioning the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders ... but these acts are no longer being respected", he said.

Basescu said every act of secession is unique, while they all have something in common as well, which is why Romania is in favor of respecting international law and is supporting the territorial integrity of Serbia and Georgia.

He said Romania is proposing a discussion about frozen conflicts in the UN Security Council, because the mechanisms which should resolve these conflict situations are inefficient.

It is about mechanisms of negotiation between a province which proclaimed independence and a country from which the territory separated, as well as about peace mechanisms which must be changed.
