The extremely high natality rate of the Kosovo Albanian population has already radically changed the demographics of the Serbian province over the last decades.

According to the Kosovo Statistical Office, for every death there were five births in Kosovo.

"This is based on our statistical data that count some 85% of the cases. We believe that some 15% of the newborns are not registered", said Kadri Sojeva, director of the Office.

In comparison, a country such as the United States roughly has one birth for every death according to United Nations figures, while countries such as Russia, Germany and Japan are recording negative growth with deaths surpassing births.

Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe. Half of its roughly 2-million-strong population is under the age of 25, according to a recent report of the UN Development Programme, UNDP.

According to the government data, it is estimated that more than 65 per cent of the population are younger than 30.
