US analyst: Washington is part of the Kosovo problem, not solution

The director of the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson Center Director for European Studies, Martin Sletzinger, argues that the United States is part of the Kosovo problem, rather than the solution.

Responding to the question whether he believed that the U.S. policy on Kosovo had contributed to a stabilisation of the Balkans, which was its proclaimed goal, he said that in the diplomatic sense, the United States had been and still was rather "part of the problem, rather than the solution."

"The disingenuous US policy towards Kosovo and its independence - pretending to be even-handed, but in reality supporting independence from Serbia -- all along helped to scuttle the (Martti) Ahtisaari plan, helped to bring the Russians firmly into the process on the side of the Serbia and has in general contributed to tensions between Serbs and Kosovars," Sletzinger said.
