Ponos met with US counterpart Admiral Michael Mullen and NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on the margins of the Military Committee of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Committee, made of 50 NATO and Partnership for Peace countries.

"We insist that KFOR remain within its current mandate and that it not provide any assistance in building up the institutions of the self-proclaimed state of Kosovo", Ponos said.

"Kfor should remain status neutral and be in charge of securing peace for all who live in Kosovo", he added.

NATO adopted in early May an Initiating directive on the planning for changing the mandate of Kfor, with the intention of training a future Kosovo "security force".
