The destabilizing effects of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence will be increasing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned after meeting his German counterpart Frank Walter-Steinmaier.

He said Moscow and Berlin had divergent views on Kosovo, and added that Russia was ready to "seek ways through which the situation could go back to the realm of law".

"Russia is firmly in favor of resolving conflicts by mutual agreements", the Russian minister said.

Lavrov said the Serbian elections showed the democratic character of Serbia, but reminded that "this democratic state had a part of its territory unilaterally taken away".

"This is illegal. It should be reconsidered and all Kosovo problems must be resolved within the international community and through the respect of democratic principles, on which are based the European Union, the OSCE and the UN", the Russian minister said.
