Pristina seeks to lobby Latin American states to recognize its secession

The ethnic Albanian Kosovo government in Pristina has sent its “foreign minister” Skender Hyseni on a lobbying campaing in Latin America to seek recognition for its unilateral secession.

The task is likely to prove very difficult as Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela have already clearly opposed Pristina's move, which they see as a blatant violation of international law.

Two Latin American countries have recognized Kosovo - Costa Rica and Peru.

Pristina hopes to get recognition from Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay, three countries which Hyseni is visiting.

Meanwhile, in Prague, supporters of Kosovo's secession in the Czech government have vowed to fight back after their failure to reach a majority in the government on the decision to recognize it in early April.

Alexander Vondra, the EU integration minister in the Czech government, has urged coalition partners to press for Kosovo recognition during one of the upcoming sessions.

"The results of the Serb elections have been a pleasant surprise for me. This is a reason why the Demo-Christians should consider the recognition of Kosovo", minister Cyril Swoboda said.

Czech president Vaclav Klaus and the Czech opposition have been firmly against Kosovo's secession.
