Kosovo at the center of talks on formation of new Serbian government

The Serbian Radical Party (SRS) of Tomislav Nikolic and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica have made a first step toward the formation of a new Serbian government by agreeing on Tuesday on the basic principles of their program – based on the fight for Serbia’s territorial integrity in Kosovo.

The SRS and the DSS have won three quarters of the votes cast in Kosovo at the Sunday parliamentary and local elections.

However, they do not have enough seats in the Serbian parliament to form a new coalition by themselves, and they would need the support of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) of Ivica Dacic.

The SPS - which shares the views of the DSS and the SRS on Kosovo - might also decide to form a coalition with the pro-Western parties close to president Boris Tadic, which arrived first at the Sunday poll.

Serbia's minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardzic said on Monday that the DSS and the SRS have "identical views" on Kosovo, which will be the basis of their future cooperation.

"Kosovo is the key priority for Serbia", Samardzic said.
