"If Kosovo can be independent, so can Abkhazia. We want a state based on the rule of law that is independent and democratic," Sergey Bagapsh said.

"We don't want Moscow to recognize us against the will of the United States as revenge for their recognition of Kosovo. We want independence because it is our right," he added.

Moscow and all major non-Western capitals have been warning that recognizing Kosovo's unilateral secession would create a dangerous precedent for separatism worldwide.

As a result, only 39 out of 192 UN member countries have recognized Kosovo's secession.
