Police said weapons were likely intended for Albanian extremists in Macedonia.

The arms cache included high-caliber weapons and ammunition, including rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds and anti-aircraft machine guns.

The huge cache was seized by members of KFOR's U.S. contingent, "due to the nature of the weapons".

The United Nations have estimated that there are still between 330,000 and 440,000 pieces of weaponry illegally held in Kosovo.

Kosovo news reports say masked ethnic Albanians have been seen brandishing weapons in the region bordering Macedonia and pledging to fight for  a territory they believe was taken away from them under a border deal between Serbia and Macedonia in 2001.

Ethnic Albanians, who make up more than a quarter of Macedonia's population, demand an immediate recognition of Kosovo's independence, greater use of the Albanian language and flag, and benefits for veterans of the guerrilla insurgency.
