Feith hints at “new talks” on Kosovo

The EU special representative to Kosovo Peter Feith hinted on Thursday at possible new talks on Kosovo, and said this had been discussed at a meeting of the self-appointed “International Steering Group” (ISG) in Vienna, which, in addition to the Czech Republic, includes representatives of countries which recognised Kosovo.

After the second meeting of the ISG since its creation in late February, Feith told a news conference that he supported UNMIK's stand that the holding of local elections called by the Serbian government "would represent a violation of UN Resolution 1244."

However,  Feith said that there was less concern regarding parliamentary elections.

Feith said that the beginning of work of the Eulex mission in Kosovo had not been on the agenda of the Thursday ISG meeting in Vienna and that the United Nations and European Union were to agree on this issue.

In a statement from the meeting, the ISG stressed "great progress" made by Kosovo in the first two months since the declaration of independence.

"Kosovo's independence has already been recognised by 40 states, including three quarters of the EU and NATO and all G8 members except one", the statement said.

The ISG welcomed the progress made in the implementation of measures from the proposed solution of Martti Athisaari.
