Putin warns Bush, NATO that international law must be respected

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned NATO leaders at the Bucharest summit as well as US President George W. Bush at the Sochi summit over the weekend that international law must be respected in international relations, pointing in particular to the Kosovo status case.

"Russia will continue to protect international law ... lately, we have faced a situation in which international law has received a severe blow by the bombing of Yugoslavia and then a unilateral recognition of Kosovo", Putin said at the meetings, according to his aides.

Russia and NATO countries - most of which have recognized Kosovo's secession -- did not achieve a breakthrough on the issue in Bucharest.

Kosovo was one of the main topics of disagreement and discussion in Bucharest, but also at the Black Sea resort of Sochi, where Putin and Bush met for the last time in the current functions.
