NATO's campaign was alleged to be "humanitarian", but its clear political and strategic objective was only shown to the world when it led on February 17 to the unilateral secession of Kosovo.

The president of Kosovo Fatmir Sejdiu said in a statement that "this year, the particularity of this date is that we mark it in a sovereign and independent state."

"The people of Kosovo will always be grateful to all those countries who backed the NATO campaign at a moment when people of Kosovo was facing extermination," Sejdiu said in Pristina.

A few kilometers southeast of Pristina, in the enclave of Gracanica, Kosovo Serbs mourned their victims in the bombings during a protest in support of Serb members of the Kosovo Police Service who walked out of work after the unilateral secession.

The protest rally started by the sounding of air raid alert sirens.
