"Regarding Kosovo, I reconfirm the position of the previous government of the Republic of Cyprus. According to the Helsinki Final Act, state boarders must be safeguarded and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states must be respected", Christofias said in the margins of the EU summit in Brussels.
"In this respect, we took the decision not to recognize this unilateral action, which we consider unfair and which, according to international law, is illegal", the Cypriot president said.
This was Christofias' first statement on the Kosovo status issue since his election in mid-February.
Some of his fellow EU foreign ministers who are favoring Kosovo's secession had expressed hope that Nicosia could change its stand after the election.
