The meeting was scheduled after Serbia warned the international community that the divisive unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence had harmed relations in the region and in the world.

"We want to have a debate within the Security Council. The declaration of independence divided the Security Council, it divided the European Union, it divided the international community at large. We believe this was a very wrong decision," Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said.

Supporters of Kosovo's secession - the US, the UK and France - had been skeptical about the need to hold the session.

"Frankly, I'm skeptical about the utility of such a meeting but we'll hear what the Russian presidency has in mind," United States UN Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said.

On Monday, Kosovo will be discussed at the meeting of EU Foreign Affairs ministers in Brussels.

Particular attention will be payed to the fate of the EU mission Eulex, which is facing Serb resistance and lack of international legitimacy.
