More than 1,000 Serbs, as well as a number of Slovenian politicians, gathered in downtown Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, which holds the EU presidency in the first part of 2008.
Hundreds of Serbs were joined by Ontario Liberal parliamentarian Jim Karygiannis in protesting against Kosovo's secession in Toronto.
Karygiannis criticized what he called the international community's rush to recognize Kosovo, while Scott Taylor, a former soldier who served in Bosnia, said Canada's recognition of Kosovo as an independent province would be a mistake.
"Like Quebec is part of Canada, like Taiwan is part of China and like Kashmir is part of India, Kosovo is part of Serbia," organizer Bojan Ratkovic told the crowd.
Meanwhile, in Canada's capital, University of Ottawa law students organized a protest attended by some 500 people on Parliament Hill.
Several thousand Serbs also protested in downown Paris, holding banners "Kosovo - the Heart of Serbia".
