Riots in Belgrade: One dead, 120 injured, fire set in the U.S. embassy

A mob of several hundred people, which had split earlier from the huge rally against the Kosovo secession just a kilometer away, set fire on the U.S. embassy in downtown Belgrade.

One of the attackers was later found dead in the compound.

The Croatian, Turkish and Belgian embassies were also attacked, but suffered less damage.

Some 120 protesters or policemen received hospital treatment after riot police intervened to repeal the mob.

In New York, the UN Security Council strongly condemned the mob attacks.

"Members condemn in the strongest terms the mob attacks against embassies in Belgrade, which have resulted in damage to embassy premises and have endangered diplomatic personnel," the Council chair, Panama's UN Ambassador Ricardo Arias, said.

The Council also reminded Belgrade of the "fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic missions and the obligation of host government ... to take all appropriate steps to protect embassy premises."
