Serbian leaders set to define counter-measures over Kosovo

Serbian leaders agreed to define on Tuesday a detailed plan of action to counter the expected unilateral independence of Kosovo, such as the annulment of such a move by Serbia’s government and parliament.

The meeting between President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Speaker of Parliament Oliver Dulic confirmed Serbian political unity and ended a week-long stalemate and serious political crisis which almost caused the fall of the government in Belgrade.

The problem that caused the rift - the controversial EU offer to sign a "political agreement" with Serbia before the unilateral independence of Kosovo - was put off the agenda for the moment.

The three leaders concluded that a serious threat of an "illegal, unilateral proclamation of Kosovo's independence exists," and "because of this, all state institutions must agree on the needed steps for annulling such an act."

As a part of preparation for future actions, Mr. Tadic called a meeting of the National Security Council for Tuesday, and Prime Minister Kostunica will hold a cabinet meeting on Thursday to draft a document which will annul Pristina's declaration of independence.

The document, entitled "Decision to annul illegal acts by the interim organs of self-government in Kosovo and Metohia on the proclamation of unilateral independence", will be activated when such an act takes place.

The decision, first adopted by the government, would then be passed to the Serbian parliament.

The opposition Serb Radical Party has said it would give full support to all Kosovo measures agreed by Tadic, Kostunica and Dulic.
