Tadic to the Kosovo Serbs: We will never let you down

"We will never let you down", Tadic said in a message addressed to the Kosovo Serbs during his speech after the results were announced.

"We wish no evil to anyone, but we are asking that everyone respects Serbia and its people", the president said, in an evident reference to the countries prepared to recognize a unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence.

Nikolic conceded defeat minutes after Serbian electoral commission said that Tadic won 50.5 per cent of votes against 47.78 per cent that went on Nikolic's account.

"I congratulate Boris Tadic on his victory. I'm sorry that fear overcame the electorate in this election. We will continue to be a great opposition,'' Nikolic told reporters and added that he was assured that Serbia's fight for Kosovo will continue.

Monitors put the turnout at 67 per cent, making the Sunday's turnout the highest since current Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica defeated former Yugoslav strongman Slobodan Milosevic in the 2000 elections.
