Romania against unilateral declaration of Kosovo’s independence

Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroioanu said Tuesday that “Romania will not accept a unilateral proclamation of Kosovo’s independence, if international law is not implemented,” but supported the deployment of an EU mission to Kosovo and was ready to take part in that mission.

"For Romania, the resolution of the Kosovo issue would have to be in line with international law. Romania will not recognize Kosovo's independence for as long as it violates those principles," Cioroioanu said, after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic in Bucharest.

The Romanian diplomat said that his country strongly supported Serbia's path to Europe.

Speaking about Kosovo, Jeremic said that Serbia backed a European mission and any kind of European engagement, but added that it had to be in accordance with international law.

The Serbian foreign minister underscored that international law was the most important weapon that should be used in the struggle for Kosovo's status, and added that Serbia was ready to discuss any solution that respected its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

"We favor a compromise solution, so the negotiations should resume, and we cannot have a dialogue if Kosovo declares independence unilaterally," Jeremic said.

On Wednesday, the Serbian minister is visiting France, which has announced it supports the independence of Kosovo.
