Botsan-Kharchenko: Russia’s plan leads to pursuit of talks on Kosovo

The special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko said Thursday that Russia's detailed plan for Kosovo, which was recommended to the U.N. Security Council, could lead to a continuation of negotiations and the unification of Belgrade's and Pristina's positions.

Botsan-Kharchenko said that Russia's call for the negotiations on Kosovo's status between Belgrade and Pristina to continue on the basis of a compromise is receiving more and more support among the new non-permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, who joined in January of this year.

The Russian diplomat called European Union plans to send a mission to Kosovo illegal.

"The EU can do as it wishes, but this is absolutely illegal, because Resolution 1244 exists in relation to Kosovo. This issue can only be solved through the Security Council, and not between Pristina and the EU," he said.

Botsan-Kharchenko added that Russia is not blocking the solution of Kosovo's status going through the U.N. Security Council. "We are not blocking it, we are insisting on a normal, lawful solution to this issue, and on finding a compromise between the two sides in the conflict," he stated.
