Tadic: Majority in the Security Council against Kosovo’s independence

Serbian President Boris Tadic said Tuesday that there was no majority for the independence of Kosovo in the UN Security Council, adding that he would advocate the continuation of talks on the province's status.

The Serbian president is attending the Security Council session on Kosovo.

"I will repeat once again that Serbia is absolutely against any kind of independence of Kosovo, and will abolish any such decision and launch legal and diplomatic processes against such a decision," Tadic said.

He underscored that he would seek ways to resume the negotiations and demonstrate Serbia's readiness for a compromise solution that did not jeopardize its territorial integrity and sovereignty, and would "definitely not allow that process to bypass Serbia."

Tadic went on to say that in New York he would work on redefening the position of countries that opposed Kosovo's independence, while at the same time opening "a dialogue with those in favor of independence, to change their mind."

"We must never give up on that and we must not surrender. Regardless of what international institutions may decide in the future, whether that process will have its legal form in the UN Security Council or some countries will try to sidestep the Security Council, we must still keep defending our interests," Tadic stressed.
