"Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns congratulated Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu from Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) today on the formation of a government coalition," the State Department said.
In telephone conversation, Burns complimented both leaders on their statements in support of an inclusive Kosovo where the Serb population and other minorities will be welcome. He also emphasized the strong commitment of the U.S. to assist the new Kosovo leadership to face the many challenges ahead.
Burns also said the United States believes quick implementation of United Nations mediator Martti Ahtisaari's plan for supervised independence for Kosovo and measures to protect the province's minorities will promote stability and enable both Kosovo and Serbia to move toward greater cooperation with NATO and the European Union.
