Zavales: EU opposition to Kosovo’s independence could grow
Former Pentagon analyst John Zavales said on Wednesday that the number of European Union members skeptical to Kosovo’s independence could grow, if Western powers keep pushing the solution of that issue outside the frameworks of United Nations.

Such a motion, Zavales said, would raise the question of legality of EU's deployment in Kosovo, even in pro-independence oriented Germany, which faces fresh round of talks on the country's future involvement in peace mission in Kosovo.
Zavales, who was responsible for management and oversight of Pentagon's humanitarian activities in Kosovo following the end of the war, said that the lack of unity within the EU raises the need of new solution to the status problem, which would include compromises and mutual agreements.
After the tour in Kosovo, Zavales next served as officer for a number of Balkan and Central European countries in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
"West needs strong UN, multilateral diplomacy and respect of international institutions in order to face other challenges overseas. Western attempt to bypass UN on Kosovo status presents a interesting paradox," Zavales said.
