The motive of the attack was unknown, according to the police spokesman Ivo Kotevski, who added that the police had intensified its controls on the exits of Skopje.
The attackers' car containing weapons was found in Rocinovo, the largest Albanian village in Macedonia and one of the headquarters of the dismissed Albanian National Liberation Army.
The attack followed a resignation of Deputy Minister of Interior Repet Elmazi.
Elmazi, a member of the ruling ethnic Albanian Democratic Party of Manduh Thaci, said the reasons behind the resignation were personal, while the opposition had called for his dismissal after his participation in a scandalous fist-fight in the Macedonian parliament last September.
