Kosovo Albanians cautious about unilateral declaration of independence

Kosovo Albanians seemed to be cautious about the unilateral declaration of independence if that move would not be strongly supported by the Western countries, a poll released Wednesday said.

Some 41 per cent of 1,033 people polled by the "Index Kosova" agency said they would support the unilateral declaration of independence if the move is not recognized by the U.S. or the EU. However, the vast majority, or 81 per cent, said they would hold up such a decision if the independence is recognized only by the U.S. and main EU countries.

The poll, the last before November 17 general elections, predicts the comprehensible victory of the newly-formed but still unofficial coalition between the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and former guerillas turned politicians from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK).

According to the survey, PDK led by former guerrilla chief Hashim Thaci has the best prospects to win the polls with 31 per cent votes, inches ahead of LDK which can count on 29 per cent.

Future coalition partners will be followed by the recently-formed New Kosovo Alliance led by local mogul Bexhet Pacolli with 15, and three other parties -the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), the Democratic League of Dardania and the Reformist Party ORA which were all polled at under 10 per cent.
