"Taking into account the religious and cultural ties between the peoples of the two countries and out of respect for the desire for independence of the Kosovar people, the kingdom of Bahrain announces that it recognises the republic of Kosovo as an independent country," said a ministry statement carried by the official BNA news agency.

The ministry was alluding to the Muslim religion shared by Bahrainis and nearly all of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority.

On Monday, the Comores confirmed they had recognized Kosovo's secession as well.
