Solana to Thaci: "Forget about Spanish recognition"

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has told the Kosovo Albanian Prime Minister Hashim Thaci to "forget about the possibility of Spain recognizing Kosovo".

"Spanish officials do not contemplate recognizing Kosovo's independence, so Pristina should not focus on seeking independence recognition from Spain," Solana said, according to Pristina media.

Instead, the newspaper claims, he suggested to the Kosovo Albanians to "try and ask for recognitions from those states with 'softer' positions".

"Forget about Spain. You should not focus on the countries that hold 'hard positions' against independence," the daily's sources quoted Solana as saying.

The same sources stated that Solana said he was engaged in having Spain "at least recognize Kosovo's passports".

The spokesman of the Pristina authorities Memli Krasnici could not confirm the authenticity of this, saying that "prime minister Thaci has not yet returned from Brussels".

He did however tell reporters that "the government of Kosovo will continue to seek recognition from Spain", and that it hopes for a "swift decision on recognition from Spain and other four EU members which have not done so thus far".
