Presevo Albanians protest jailing of ex-fighters

A thousand ethnic Albanians protested in the southern Serbian town of Presevo on Monday demanding an immediate release of 10 former Kosovo guerrilla fighters arrested last December on suspicion of being involved in killings and abductions of 150 Serbs in Kosovo in 1999.

They also demanded amnesty for all the fighters of the Liberation Army of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, the local Albanian guerilla that unsuccessfully challenged Serb security forces in 2001-01, aiming at annexing the Presevo valley, a region of southern Serbia with a majority Albanian population, to Kosovo.

The protest, held in front of the Presevo municipal assembly, passed without incidents.
