HRW criticizes Belgrade for failing to prevent harassment of Albanians in northern Serbia
The Human Rights Watch campaign group has criticized the Serbian government for failing to prevent attacks against businesses and homes owned by ethnic Albanians following Kosovo’s declaration of independence in February

The report documents attacks against ethnic Albanians and other minorities in February and March 2008, including smashed windows in businesses and homes, attempted arson, hate graffiti and intimidating protests.
A total of 221 incidents were recorded by Serbian police between 17 February and 20 March, most of which took place in the in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.
No one was injured in the incidents, but the material damage was sufficient to shut down temporarily some of the smaller businesses, like bakeries.
