Macedonia to align Kosovo policy with EU, NATO

The speaker of the Macedonian Parliament Ljubisa Georgijevski said that the Skopje stand on the resolution of Kosovo's future status will be aligned with the EU and NATO, as well it will depend on how much the solution contributes to stability in the region.

"Macedonia is an EU membership candidate and is on the verge of joining NATO, and we will make sure our opinions on Kosovo are in line with EU and NATO positions," Georgijevski said after a visit to Belgrade.

He stressed that the Skopje authorities would welcome any solution that would boost stability in the region.

"We hope that, when it comes to the future status of Kosovo, Europe will speak in one voice, and that voice will include a compromise and peaceful solution," he said.

Georgijevski added that "we are far from a potential solution we also want, and that is the solution agreed by Belgrade too."

He went on to say that Macedonia is a country with a 400,000 Albanian population and 50,000 Serbs, and it must take care of the delicate balance between those citizens, who have completely opposite opinions on the solution to the Kosovo problem.
