The EU member states already acted on an individual basis when deciding on the issue of recognition of Kosovo's unilateral secession from Serbia.

Diplomatic sources in Brussels have told KosovoCompromise.com that the EU is striving for a common position, but that it is unclear whether it would be able to achieve it.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands said is not opposed to the debate on Serbia's initiative in the UN General Assembly, but it will take a final position on the draft Serb resolution after further contacts with the other EU members, Dutch Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bart Rijs said.

Rijs underscored that the Netherlands was restrained during the vote on including the Serb initiative in the agenda.

"We believe in the international law and we are not opposed to a debate on this issue in the UN General Assembly", Rijs set out.
