Report: KFOR was warned of depleted uranium

Upon their arrival to Kosovo in November 1999, KFOR's multinational Brigade West received a nuclear, biological and chemical manual, which was entitled KFOR International Brigade West - Depleted Uranium - Information Book and which had a skull on its cover page, warning of a nuclear threat, the Frankfurt-based newspaper Vesti reported on Monday

A copy of the manual was given to Vesti by Falco Acame, a retired Italian admiral, who served at the NATO Naval Fleet in the Mediterranean until 1975 and who dedicated the latest years to his work for the association for the protection of soldiers who fell ill because of the use of depleted uranium in peacekeeping missions.

"The introduction of the manual says, among other things, that Serbian army vehicles and material must represent a danger to the troops and civilians who come into close contact with them and that it is only experts who may examine the damaged of destroyed vehicles and material."

The final chapter is entitled "Warning: Food and water will become unconsumable because of the contamination with the depleted uranium dust. Do not eat uncontrolled food. Inhaled particles may cause long-term damage", the daily said.

These warnings have never been received by civilians who live in Kosovo or those who came to Kosovo either as members of NGOs or as journalists and experts, Vesti reported.

According to experts, the manual is the first official and explicit confirmation that NATO used not just the depleted uranium-charged missiles, but also cruising missiles with depleted uranium.
