President of the UN General Assembly: Serbia's initiative important for UN future

The president of the UN General Assembly Miguel D' Escoto Brockmann assessed on Monday evening, in talks with Serbian President Boris Tadic, that Belgrade's initiative on the legality of Kosovo's unilateral independence declaration in front of the International Court of Justice would get the issue of international law back into the focus of the talks about the future of the world organisation.

Addressing the press in New York, Tadic conveyed that the new General Assembly president had told him that the world organisation could not function without the respect of international law.

Tadic added that he had told Brockmann it was extremely important for Serbia that a decision be reached as soon as possible on the resolution which required from the UN General Assembly to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of Kosovo's declared independence and of the acknowledgement of such an act by certain countries.

The Serbian president also met with Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, who informed him that the countries that had recognised Kosovo independence were making a huge pressure on Montenegro's authorities to act likewise.

"I presented the stand that that would be a completely unacceptable gesture for Serbia and that my country would have to react, just as it did in all the other previous cases of Kosovo recognition", Tadic said.

"I do not think that would be of any use for anyone", he added.

"My argumentation is the opposite of the one which can be heard these days in certain international circles that Montenegro's recognition of Kosovo independence would contribute to the stabilisation of the region", Tadic said.

"It would destabilize the region and this is my unequivocable position", Tadic said and added that he would continue the talks with the Montenegrin leadership on the Kosovo issue.
