The decision by some countries to recognize Kosovo's independence was a mistake, former French foreign minister Hubert Vedrine assessed for the latest issue of the Swiss weekly L'Hebdo

"An essential autonomy should have been implemented in Kosovo", said Vedrine, who is one of the authors of this concept within the Contact Group, which was created in order to avoid the precedent of recognizing independence.

"There were too many hasty and reckless moves regarding Kosovo, and many reasonable Russians told us: 'Do not do that,' because this precedent will be used by other forces in Russia", said Vedrine, who, as French foreign minister, was in the Contact Group in 1999.
