Serbia’s ICJ initiative: Counties that recognized Kosovo might face problems

International law expert Adam Roberts of the Oxford University has said that if the International Court of Justice(ICJ)assesses that the unilateral independence of Kosovo represents a violation of international law, countries which recognized its independence would be faced with a problem

"They would have to decide either to stay with that decision, the legality of which is being denied, or try to somehow return to the adherence of law - by lowering the level of diplomatic relations with Kosovo, for instance", Roberts told the BBC.

He assessed that if the UN General Assembly accepts the UN initiative  and requests the Court to give its opinion on the legality of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, the process of recognizing Kosovo's independence will be for the most part stopped while the issue is being discussed before the ICJ.
