Russia to support Serbia's initiative at the UN General Assembly

From the very beginning Russia backed Serbia in its initiative that the UN General Assembly requests from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) its legal opinion on the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, Russian Ambassador in Belgrade Alexander Konuzin has said, adding that, according to his findings, Russian diplomats in New York actively cooperate on the realization of this initiative, including working with third countries

When asked whether it is in Russia's interest that, following the Russian recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, inviolability of Serbia's borders be considered before this court, he replied that he sees no reason for bringing the two issues into connection.

"Serbia is the subject of the violent division of its territory, despite the will of its people and government, along with the violation of international law, UN Charter and UN SC Resolution 1244.  Belgrade has the full right to defend its national interests.  On the other hand, the Russian recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was caused by the Georgian armed aggression against the communities living in the country, including Russian nationals, and by its attack on the Russian peacekeeping forces," Konuzin pointed out.
