EU summit: Countries which did not recognize Kosovo slam those which did

European Union countries which did not recognize Kosovo’s secession at Monday’s summit in Brussels harshly criticized those which did, clearly linking this act with the crisis in Georgia and Russia’s recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

The French EU presidency tried to avoid making the parallel between Kosovo and South Ossetia, but opponents of the independence of Kosovo insisted that their warnings about the recognition of the unilateral move being against international law have proven right, which is not "backfiring" in the case of Georgia.

The chairman of the EU, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, tried to respond to the critics by arguing that Kosovo is a "unique case" because it was preceded by NATO bombings, UN administration and international talks.

Six out of 27 EU countries did not recognize Kosovo: Spain, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Greece and Cyprus.
