Kosovo precedent: Russian parliament urges Kremlin to recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia

The Russian Parliament has urged President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two regions of Georgia which had been asking for recognition of their unilateral secession based on the Kosovo precededent

Lawmakers in both houses of parliament voted unanimously for the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The move was blasted by the very same Western states which recognized the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo in February.

"Georgia's territorial integrity and borders must command the same respect as every other nation's, including Russia's," said U.S. President George W. Bush, whose country had masterminded Kosovo's secession and has been lobbying for months worldwide for recognition of the separatist province.

These criticisms were disregarded in Moscow, as the Russian leadership argued it would be "nothing frighting" if it broke all ties with NATO.
