The Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg wrote a letter to Kosovo's President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci to inform them of Malta's recognition.

Borg noted that Malta's recognition of Kosovo "joins that of many European and Western countries", adding that "there was no other alternative given the volatile circumstances the region experienced during the last decade".

A total of 46 out of 192 countries in the world have recognized Kosovo's secession.

Six EU countries have not recognized Kosovo: Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Cyprus, Spain and Portugal.
