Belgrade: Kosovo’s precedent echoed in South Ossetia
Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said the precedent of Western support for Kosovo’s unilateral secession from Serbia was echoed in the conflict in South Ossetia.

"We have pointed out to the international community from the very start that the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo could present a dangerous precedent," Jeremic said.
"Unfortunately, this has proven to be true much sooner than anyone expected," he argued.
Meanwhile, in Paris, the French foreign ministry continued to argue that Kosovo is a "unique case" and cannot represent a precedent.
"As you are aware, Kosovo is a unique case and we have
always said that it will not represent a precedent," Frederic Desagneaux
said.
Desagneaux was responding to a question whether France
would back the demands of South Ossetia and Abkhazia for
independence on the basis of the right of nations to self-determination, which
was the basis for the French recognition of the unilaterally declared
independence of Kosovo.
France supports
the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia
within its internationally recognized borders, the spokesman said.
