The clash Georgia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia has been crucially influenced by Kosovo's separation from Serbia, Czech President Vaclav Klaus told the Czech press.

"In Kosovo's separation Russia gained a strong justification for its intervention and I'm afraid that we will tackle the Kosovo precedent's consequences for a long time to come, and not only in the Caucasus," Klaus said.

The Czech president was a vocal opponent of Kosovo's secession, arguing it would provoke a dangerous precedent and instability in the Balkans, the Caucausus and elsewhere.

Despite his opposition, Prague recognized Kosovo under pressure from Brussels and Washington.
