Russia: Pressure for recognition of Kosovo to increase ahead of UN General Assembly

Former Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Alexeyev said on Thursday that ahead of the September session of the UN General Assembly one could expect bigger pressure on most states to recognise the unilaterally-declared independence of Kosovo.

"The decision should be adopted by the majority. That is why bigger pressure on most countries is possible ahead of the General Assembly to force them to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo", said Alexeyev, commenting on Serbia's intention to request the approval of the General Assembly to address the International Court of Justice to review the legality of secession of Serbia's southern province.

The Russian diplomat told the Vremya Novostey daily in an interview that the declaration of independence had destabilised the Balkans even further and that there was knowledge that different Albanian groups in the region coordinated efforts to make concerted efforts at the needed moment with the aim of changing again borders in the Balkans.
