European swimming champion suspended for wearing “Kosovo is Serbia” t-shirt

New European championship, Serbian swimmer Milorad Cavic, was suspended on Friday from further competition at the 2008 European championships in The Netherlands for wearing a “Kosovo is Serbia” t-shirt at the award ceremony.

The move was dubbed "clear political action" by the discipline commission of the tournament.

The American-born Serb beat the European record twice in two days and won largely the 50 m European title.

Cavic said he wanted to show « positive energy towards the country he is representing ».

"The country is torn apart and ... my goal was just to uplift them," he said

Cavic will be among the favorites for titles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing later this year.
