Northern Kosovo Serbs should call on the Serbian government to keep education and healthcare in the area within the Serbian system, former state secretary in the Ministry for Kosovo Oliver Ivanovic stated on Tuesday.

Ivanovic called on representatives of northern Kosovo Serbs not to waste their energy on attempts of changing the Brussels agreement because it cannot be changed, and instead invest efforts in achieving what can realistically be achieved.

Under the given circumstances, representatives of northern Kosovo Serbs should ask for government guarantees that they would stay within Serbia's system in the domains which are exceptionally important for them, Ivanovic said in a programme broadcast by the Belgrade-based Television.

The Serbian government needs to issue guarantees in the sectors such as healthcare and education, Ivanovic said and warned that divisions among Serbs would be useful for their opponents.

There are no major differences between Serbs living in southern and those in northern Kosovo, Ivanovic said and underscored that Serbia can conduct two policies in Kosovo.

President of the civil initiative 'Serbia, Democracy, Justice' warned that further divergences with the Serbian government would be dangerous and are not advised.

The north does constitute a compact territory with a significant number of citizens, but attention needs to be paid to the Serb community to the south of the Ibar River as well, Ivanovic said.

He stated that it is important for Serbia to be strong in economic terms and maintain a good position in the international community so as to be able to find solutions to problems.
