Government will reach agreement with Kosovo Serbs

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Suzana Grubjesic stated on Monday that it is understandable that Serbs from Kosovo are opposing the Brussels' initial agreement proposal on the northern part of the province but she expressed the belief that an agreement would be reached eventually.

In an interview for Radio and Television of Serbia, Grubjesic said that Serbs from northern Kosovo are opposing the agreement proposal because every agreement is unacceptable for them at the moment, but the Serbian government will have to conduct serious talks with them as they are a part of Serbia's people with whom communication needs to be good.
"They are the only ones whose opposition to the agreement I can understand because the ideal case for them would be either a partition or a different scenario that suits them better," Grubjesic said and added that any agreement is unacceptable for them now, but when tensions ease and when Kosovo Serbs see what the agreement actually envisages and what safety and security guarantees they are getting - which exceed what they have at the moment - an agreement would be a possibility.

Grubjesic said that EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele should visit Belgrade on Friday and added that a working group should be set up by April 26 that would prepare an action plan and implement the agreement with Pristina.

Nobody expects the implementation to take place over night but we need to take this direction and then the date will become certain, Grubjesic said and noted that at that point, there will be no more excuses for anyone from the EU to deny Serbia the date of accession talks.

Grubjesic stated that Serbia's institutions are capable and willing to conduct reforms ahead. She expressed the hope that Serbia will get a chance and show that it has the necessary administrative capacities. Serbia has good administration capable of meeting all the requirements envisaged in the European agenda, she concluded.
