Moore: Recognition was not essence of agreement

Jonathan Moore, director of the Office of South-Central European Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, says the essence of the Brussels agreement was not recognition of Kosovo.

Recognition of Kosovo as an independent state was not Serbia's obligation or the issue at hand in this agreement, its essence is changing everyone's lives for the better, the American diplomat said in an interview for KIM radio.

He said the agreement is a big step forward and a great and positive thing for Serbia and Kosovo.

This is the first stage, now comes implementation. There are many details that need to be cleared up in the near future, such as the position of majority Serb municipalities south of the Ibar. This can be resolved in a day or two through technical dialogue and peaceful means, said Moore.

Asked to comment on the fact Serb leaders in northern Kosovo have said they will oppose the agreement, Moore said he understands not everyone is happy, and that some other people in Kosovo are also not happy, but this will change when they realize the agreement will make a better and more stable future possible for all, including the people in the north, and also allow Serbia and Kosovo to proceed with European integration.
