NATO supports the dialogue and we are ready to play our role if an agreement is reached, Rasmussen told a press conference at the Alliance's headquarters.

However, he did not want to say whether NATO will give guarantees that the Kosovo army will not be present in the Serb-majority municipalities, which is one of the key requests of the Belgrade delegation in talks with Pristina.

Rasmussen just said that he is in constant contact with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

The EU and NATO are cooperating closely and coordinating their moves, he said, and voiced hope that Belgrade and Pristina will reach an agreement very soon.

During a brief press conference, which mostly dealt with topics concerning his Asian tour, Rasmussen did not want to talk about his meeting with Serbia's negotiating team, which took place at NATO's headquarters on Thursday.

NATO's press service told the press that the meeting was not official.
