Ashton regrets Serbian government's decision

European foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said late on Monday that she regrets the decision of the Serbian government to reject EU-brokered proposals for an agreement with Pristina and called on them to "make a last effort to reach an agreement, for the benefit of their people."

"I believe that all the elements for an agreement on northern Kosovo are on the table," Ashton said in a release for the media, adding that the aim of the eight rounds of the dialogue held so far was to reach an agreement and not for the EU to impose one.

She did not respond directly to the request of the Serbian government regarding a continuation of the dialogue with Pristina, but stated that the rounds held so far, some of which lasted for over 13 hours, were from the very beginning staged in a clearly defined time framework, having in mind the wish of the European Council for Serbia and Kosovo to make certain progress by the summer.

Ashton said that she hopes discussion within the EU would be organised in the coming days as a sign of support to the right steps of Serbia and Kosovo toward a European future.

In the release, Ashton commended the prime ministers of Serbia and Kosovo on the efforts they invested so far in the process and expressed the belief that Serbia and Kosovo will have a bright future, adding that people, especially the citizens in northern Kosovo, deserve a better life.
