US: Pristina to decide on autonomy for Kosovo Serbs

The United States believes that it is up to Pristina "how it will establish the kinds of autonomy that some ethnic Serbs are seeking in the north," while Belgrade's role is to make it clear to the Serbs that it is time to resolve these issues, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Victoria Nuland said late Tuesday.

"We want to see a peaceful resolution of these issues that allow both Kosovo and Serbia to move forward and to move forward along a European trajectory," Nuland told a press conference at the State Department headquarters.

As she put it, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is working with representatives of both parties on the issues of parallel Serb structures, recognition, normalization of relations and others.

Asked whether Belgrade has a role in resolving the issue relating to the position of Serbs in northern Kosovo, Nuland said that Washington sees a role for Serbia in making clear to Serb citizens, ethnic Serbs, that it is time to resolve these issues.
